What keyword gap analysis finds

Your competitors are ranking for keywords your customers are searching.

Every keyword your competitor ranks for on page 1 that you don't appear for is traffic going to them instead of you — from people who are already searching for exactly what you sell.

01

Competitor gaps — proven demand, clear intent

These keywords already have an audience. Someone built a page for them, that page is ranking, and people are clicking. A competitor gap means you can see the demand, judge the content angle from what's already winning, and write something better targeted to your product. WriteGap filters gaps by difficulty and volume — with both thresholds scaled to your domain strength, so the list stays winnable for your site specifically.

Example gap

Ahrefs ranks #3 for "semrush alternative for indie founders" — 3,200 searches/month. WriteGap flags it. Their page compares 12 tools generically. Yours covers exactly the workflow a solo founder needs. Better angle wins.

02

Unclaimed keywords — first publisher wins

Not all gaps are competitor keywords. Some are queries with real search volume where nobody ranks yet — unclaimed territory. WriteGap finds these by generating a seed keyword from your product description, pulling 500+ suggestions from DataForSEO, and filtering for relevance and winnability (difficulty below 40). First to publish a good article takes position 1, permanently.

Example unclaimed keyword

2,700 searches/month for "find competitor keywords without semrush". Semrush isn't writing that article. Nobody is. One targeted article claims it — and it doesn't come back.

03

GSC quick wins — page 2 gaps hiding in plain sight

Connect Google Search Console and WriteGap finds a third category: keywords where your site already ranks positions 11–20. You're close — not a new content problem, a page-optimization problem. WriteGap reads your existing page and writes the specific fix (new H1, content section, schema) to push it onto page 1.

Example quick win

Ranking #14 for "keyword gap analysis tool". WriteGap rewrites the H1, adds a 200-word explanation of how the analysis works, and generates FAQ schema. One paste — position improves to #7.

How the analysis works

Every week, automatically.

01

Competitor ranking pull

WriteGap fetches up to 700 ranked keywords for each of your competitors, narrowed to their top-20 positions. Not your entire backlink profile — just the keywords driving their traffic.

02

Gap identification + filtering

Competitor keywords are compared against your rankings. Gaps are filtered by search volume, keyword difficulty, 2+ word queries, and commercial or task intent — the volume floor and difficulty ceiling both scale to your domain strength and the size of each language market.

pre-filtered · no manual sifting
03

Brief + draft ready

The top gaps land in your dashboard with a plain-English brief for each. One click generates the full article draft — H1, sections, schema, semantic keywords included.

Questions

How keyword gap analysis works in WriteGap.

What is keyword gap analysis?

Keyword gap analysis is the process of finding keywords that your competitors rank for in Google that your own site doesn't rank for at all. These gaps represent traffic your competitors are capturing from your target audience — customers who searched for something and found your competitor instead of you. Closing those gaps with targeted content is one of the most reliable ways to grow organic traffic.

How does WriteGap run keyword gap analysis?

WriteGap fetches up to 700 ranked keywords for each of your competitors using DataForSEO, filtered server-side to the ones they rank in the top 20 for. It compares that list against your own rankings to find the gaps — keywords where competitors rank on page 1 and you don't rank at all. Then it filters those gaps by search volume, keyword difficulty, and commercial intent — with the volume floor and difficulty ceiling scaled to your domain strength, so a newer site sees easier keywords it can actually win. What lands in your brief is a curated set of winnable gaps, not a raw data dump.

How often does the gap analysis run?

Every week, automatically. You don't trigger it — a fresh brief lands in your dashboard with that week's highest-value gaps. WriteGap also cross-references previous briefs so it never suggests a keyword you've already targeted.

How are competitors identified?

WriteGap auto-detects your competitors from your product description using Claude. It specifically looks for tools with the same primary use case as yours — not generic directories, review sites, or large suites where your product category is a minor feature. You can override the detected list at any time in Settings.

Does keyword gap analysis work for non-English sites?

Yes. WriteGap runs gap analysis in 8 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, and Arabic. Each language gets its own competitive analysis with language-specific volume floors. French keywords, for example, use a lower minimum volume threshold than English because the total search market is smaller.
