Semrush Alternatives for Founders Who Don't Need the Whole Suite

Semrush is powerful and priced for teams that use it daily. If you're a solo founder paying for depth you never touch, here are the alternatives that cost a fraction and cover what you actually use.

Semrush is one of the most complete SEO platforms there is. That's exactly the problem for a solo founder: its Pro plan starts around $140/month, the Guru plan most teams actually need is closer to $250, and you're paying for daily-use depth — rank tracking, site audits, backlink analytics, PPC research, dozens of tools — when you publish a few articles a month. The tool isn't wrong. It's just priced for someone who isn't you.

Here are the alternatives that cover what a founder actually uses, at a fraction of the cost.

Be honest about which Semrush features you use

Before switching, look at what you actually open Semrush for. Most solo founders use maybe three things:

  • Keyword volume and difficulty lookups.
  • Competitor keyword lists (what they rank for that you don't).
  • Occasional rank tracking on a handful of keywords.

If that's your usage, you're paying enterprise-suite prices for a research tool. Everything below covers those three jobs for far less.

The budget all-rounders

Mangools (which includes KWFinder) is the cheapest genuinely-good option, starting around $29/month. Friendly interface, solid keyword and SERP data, basic backlink and rank-tracking tools. For most founders this is the sweet spot, it covers the three core jobs without the Semrush price.

SE Ranking starts around $65/month and is the closest thing to a full Semrush replacement: keyword tracking, site audit, competitor research, and backlink monitoring at roughly half the cost. If you want the breadth but not the bill, this is the pick.

Ubersuggest (~$12/month) and Moz Pro (Starter ~$49/month) round out the budget tier. Ubersuggest is the beginner option with thinner data; Moz is a cleaner, approachable mid-tier for a single site.

The free floor

Don't overlook it: Google Search Console is free and the only source of your site's real Google rankings and impressions — better than any third-party estimate for your own pages. A lot of what founders pay Semrush for (how am I actually ranking?) is already in GSC for nothing. Pair it with a cheap keyword tool and you've replaced most of a Semrush subscription.

If your real goal is acting on the data, not exploring it

Here's the distinction that decides it. Semrush and its alternatives are research tools, they hand you data and leave the acting to you. If you have plenty of time and want to explore keywords freely, buy one of the above.

But most solo founders don't have a data problem, they have a time problem. They already roughly know what to do; they just never run the analysis and write the content week after week. That's the gap WriteGap fills: instead of a suite you log into and explore, it pulls your GSC and competitor data automatically, finds the gaps worth targeting, and hands you a brief and draft every Monday.

The honest limits: WriteGap is not a research suite. No sprawling keyword database to browse, no backlink explorer, no rank-tracking dashboards for clients. If you want to investigate SEO, use a Semrush alternative. If you want the weekly output without running the investigation yourself, that's WriteGap.

The bottom line

Semrush is worth it if SEO is your full-time job or you manage multiple sites. For a solo founder publishing occasionally, it's depth you'll pay for and never touch. Pair free Google Search Console with a budget tool like Mangools or SE Ranking and you've covered the research. And if your bottleneck isn't research at all but the weekly work of turning it into published content, a suite won't fix that — it'll just be a more expensive tool you don't open.
